Newport, here we come

Second visit to American sailing mecca

Since 1639, Newport’s breath-taking scenery and world-class sailing venue has attracted visitors and sailors from around the world. It was long overdue in making its debut as a host port, but did so in 2014-15 and returns again in 2017-18. The Race Village is located in the historic Fort Adams, the largest fortification in the United States. Newport is home to awe-inspiring coastal landscape, quaint colonial and New England architecture, a thriving waterfront with restaurants, bistros, art galleries and boutiques and welcoming hospitality.

For those whose hearts lie in architecture, design, and history, Newport offers tours of the mansions, interesting museums, many restored sea captains’ homes and a number of walking tours that reveal the Colonial charm of the city.

Newport is surrounded by three bodies of water on the North American coast: the stunning beauty of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound and the Sakonnet River provide a panoramic water view on the island community.

The yachting history of Newport is central to the history and the modern era of American sailing. The quaint harbour is speckled with a wide variety of boats including classic yachts, schooners and restored rum runners from the prohibition era and is the home of legendary 12-metre yachts such as Weatherly, Heritage, Northern Light, Nefertiti, Gleam, American Eagle, Intrepid, Courageous and many more.

Almost every type of sailing event has been hosted in Newport over the decades including Olympic trials, maxi-yacht regattas, distance races such as the Newport to Bermuda Race, America’s Cup World Series, handicap and classic racing and one-design racing including many local, national and world championships.

Anyone who has ever been enchanted by the stories and style of maritime America will be charmed and fascinated by the authentically familiar atmosphere of this beautifully situated seaport town.
